Might the Cigarette Ban in England Drive Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Internet?

A lot has been stated in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge aid to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. But will the net version of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or will it not compare to its real life relative?
Bingo has been an classic game normally played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had undergone a recent resurgence in popularity with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo halls instead of the bars on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the anti smoking law across UK.
Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public location will not be allowed to permit smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular locations where many people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the industry is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Certainly they haven’t forgotten this familiar game?
The answer is online. People realise that they can enjoy bingo using their computer while enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, have a chance at massive cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course playing online is unlikely to replace the collective portion of heading over to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the law has left a lot of bingo players with no alternative.
